The Ewes are an ethnic group who were originally called the Dagon people.

According to history, Ewes are known to be migrates from Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia in the 11th century.
Oral tradition claims the Ewes were lead by an ancestor called Gu, where under his leadership lead them to settle at river Nile presently call Egypt.

When it became more difficult living in Egypt, the Ewes migrated to settle at Sudan stayed for a short while but due to famine and slave raids by the slave traders who preferred black slaves due to their physique and courage.

The Ewes moved from Sudan to Abyssinia presently called Ethiopia but however, the slave raid continued and they eventually decided to leave this time to the Southwest into the region between the bend river Niger and the middle reaches of Senegal.

The Ewes then moved towards river niger the present day Nigeria at the height of the Oyo empire, settled briefly at ILE-IFE in the Yuruba land and entered Dahome presently called Republic or Benin. In ILE-IFE, they revived and perfected the at of divination which is called Afa which their ancestors abandoned. The Ewes then settled in Notsie presently called the Republic of Togo, Dahome, and the Volta region of Ghana today.
